The short answer

median posted day rate, P25 €430 to P75 €535 (948 missions)
€475
median in Paris and Île-de-France (591) vs the rest of France (320)
€500 vs €435
median for AI, ML and data science missions, the highest large group (260)
€523

A day rate above €600 is rare in these postings: 12.8% of missions post a midpoint of €600 or more, and 3.3% reach €700. Four in ten (43.7%) post €500 or more.

Posted is not paid. A mission page shows the client's budget or the platform's estimate, and the rate you sign can differ. Treat these as the ceiling the market advertises, not a contract.

Posted day rate (EUR per day, midpoint of the posted range) by role family. Freelance missions on French freelance boards, posted mostly July to October 2026, euros only, 150 to 2,000 EUR per day band. Role family is assigned from keywords in the title. A further 26 missions that fit no family are in the total only.

AI, ML and data science pays the most among the large groups, about €60 above generic software development at the median. Security has a similar median but the widest spread: its top quarter starts at €634. Junior-titled missions are too few to report (10).

Titles that signal seniority (senior, lead, expert, confirmed, architect) post a median of €500 (379 missions), against €465 for titles that state no level (559).

Median posted day rate (EUR per day), Paris and Île-de-France vs the rest of France. Missions per cell in brackets. QA and security have fewer than 20 missions outside Île-de-France and are left out. DevOps outside Paris is only just over 20: directional.

The gap is largest for software developers: €475 in Île-de-France against €386 elsewhere in France. For AI and data roles it is about €50. DevOps is the exception, with the same median in both. A further 37 missions sit outside France (Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK and others) with a median of €570, too few to split by role: directional only.

What we counted

OfferMagnet reads freelance missions from French freelance boards and a few startup boards. Of 1,649 freelance postings in our index, 1,061 carry a rate. We kept the 989 in euros after dropping duplicate ids, then applied the sanity band: 948 remain.

  1. Day rate: the midpoint of the posted minimum and maximum, in euros per day. When only one number is posted we use it. Currencies are never mixed.
  2. Sanity band, €150 to €2,000 per day: both ends of the range must fall inside it. That removed 41 values: 36 ranges with a minimum of exactly €100 (a floor that looks like a placeholder), 3 minimums of €111 to €140 that look like hourly figures, and 2 values of €75,000 and €80,000 that are yearly salaries.
  3. Set aside, not converted: 45 US-dollar postings from a startup board (ranges such as 1,000 to 100,000 are yearly pay, not day rates) and 24 pound-sterling ones. We did not convert either currency.
  4. Paris / Île-de-France: the location text contains Paris or Île-de-France. Rest of France: any other French location.

What to do with this

  1. Anchor on a range, not a number. For most tech roles in France, €430 to €535 is the middle half. Quote near the top if you are senior or in AI, ML or security.
  2. Price the place. Outside Île-de-France, expect about €65 less at the median, and about €90 less for software developers.
  3. Read a posted range as the client's ceiling. The usual width is €80 between minimum and maximum, so the real number is negotiated inside it.
  4. Be suspicious of single outliers. A "€100" floor or a five-figure number is a field error, not an offer.

FAQ

›What is the average freelance developer day rate in France?

In these postings the median is €475 per day for all tech roles and €460 for software developers, with a middle half of €400 to €515 for developers.

›Do freelance AI engineers earn more?

Yes. AI, ML and data science missions post a median of €523 per day (260 missions), about €60 above software developers.

›How much more does Paris pay than the rest of France?

A median of €500 in Paris and Île-de-France against €435 elsewhere, a gap of €65. For software developers the gap is €475 vs €386.

›Are these day rates what freelancers actually bill?

No. They are posted ranges: a client budget or a board's estimate. Real contracts are negotiated and often land inside or below the range.

›Why not include US dollar or pound rates?

Currencies are never mixed. The dollar postings in our index are yearly salaries, and the 24 pound postings are too few to split by role.

Method and sources

  • Source: OfferMagnet's own index of public postings, type freelance, from French freelance boards and a startup board, read 30 October 2026. 948 euro missions after cleaning; about 99% were posted between July and October 2026.
  • Day rate = midpoint of rate_min and rate_max in euros. Kept only if both ends fall within €150 to €2,000 per day; ids de-duplicated. Euro rows only; dollar and pound rows reported separately and not converted.
  • Role family is assigned by keywords in the title and is rough. Paris / Île-de-France means the location text contains Paris or Île-de-France. Cells under 20 are dropped or marked directional.
  • We report counts of missions, not people. No applicant or customer data is used.
